In 2019, we invited the public to explore San Jose’s rich cultural vibrancy at our series of 15 free concerts featuring a variety of musicians and cultural activities. Popping up in every corner of the city, the events allowed attendees to discover new music, things to do and places to visit—plus, special experiences that only San Jose has to offer.
Do you know San Jose?
The DKYSJ project is supported through the generosity of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
In response to the 50th anniversary of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David ode to our city “Do you Know the Way to San Jose?” we asked the musical questions: “What is the soundtrack of San Jose, today?” What part does live music play in our city’s social life? How can music help us explore and celebrate San Jose rich, hyper-local cultures? 2019 partnering events and locations across the city included Eastridge Center, San Jose Flea Market, the Rose Garden, Calabazas Park, Meadowfair Park, Valle Verde Seedling Market, San Jose’s Rose Garden, History San Jose, Village Fest, Japantown Immersive, SoFA Street Fair, and more. Featured musicians include emerging San Jose-based jazz, hip-hop, indie rock, Latin jazz, electronic, soul and R&B, world, Latin alternative, DJs, and more paired with nationally recognized acts in similar musical styles.

As part of the initiative we selected San Jose songwriter, musician and producer B. Lewis to serve as our Artist-in-Residence, for 2019-20. He was a featured guest artist instructor at the 2019 Summer Jazz Camp working with local students to expand their own music-making boundaries. He also served as curatorial advisor for 2019Jazz Beyond programming and was featured in two DJ sets at the 30th Anniversary Summer Fest on the Jazz Beyond Stage.
As part of the initiative, San Jose Jazz commissioned B. Lewis' first full LP, Sunset On Carmella, which represents a giant leap forward in his music making. During years collaborating with EDM and hip-hop’s vanguard, his work has appeared on Fox hit shows Empire and Star, as well as on the recent Kanye West release Jesus is King. On Sunset On Carmella, Lewis comes to the forefront with a self-reflective narrative tracing the bewilderment of love’s peaks and valleys. Scaling the genres that brought notoriety to his infectious production work, B. Lewis breaks out on Sunset On Carmella ready for the world to hear his story through anthemic original tracks featuring special guests TZAR, Elujay and ASTU, artists that also appeared at DYKSJ events.
